Why can't I add members to my shared Slack channel?

Last updated: May 20, 2026

Context

When trying to add a new member to a shared Slack channel, you may see an error message indicating that the channel is owned by another organization, preventing you from inviting anyone directly.

Answer

This happens because shared Slack channels have permission settings that may restrict who can invite new members. If the channel was created or is owned by the vendor's organization, invite permissions may not be enabled for your side by default.

To resolve this, please reach out to our support team and we can:

  1. Add the new member to the channel on your behalf.

  2. Enable invite permissions for your organization so you can add members yourself going forward.

Once invite permissions have been enabled, you will be able to add new members to the channel without needing to contact support each time.
